Acadia National Park

Acadia National Park is the “Crowned Jewel of the North Atlantic Coast” and a true highlight on our Maine tour. The premier national park of the New England, Acadia has a beautiful rocky coastline as well as stunning mountainous views. This landscape was formed over millions of years by various influences such as carving glaciers, relentless ocean waves, wind, and even volcanoes.

Acadia National Park is home to 158 miles of hiking trails. We love exploring the Sand Beach area in the park for beautiful ocean views and great hiking. You can stroll along the Ocean Path and enjoy the sights and sounds of crashing waves on the rocky pink shoreline. That’s right, it’s pink!  The pink rock is Cadillac Mountain Granite and is over 420 million years old! At high tide, you might  get splashed at Thunder Hole!

Hiking to the top of Gorham Mountain gives you spectacular views of the coastline, including Sand Beach and the Great Head Peninsula. 

We love hiking the quiet side of Acadia, Southwest Harbor too. There you find great hikes like Flying Mountain and Acadia Mountain with sweeping views of Somes Sound. The Jordon Pond area offers great hikes around serene lakes. 

Monhegan Island Maine

Cadillac Mountain is the highest point in the park, AND along the entire US Atlantic coast at 1,530 feet!  We visit the top at sunset. You are rewarded with 360 degree views of the surrounding mountains, Bar Harbor, and the Cranberry and Porcupine Islands

Another unique feature of Acadia National Park are the 45 miles of Carriage Roads  which are closed to all vehicles. They were built by the Rockerfellers, and originally meant for horse drawn carriages. These trails are now used by bikers, hikers, as well as horseback riders and yes some horse drawn carriages. They provide a traffic free way to experience the park.

We cannot forget about Bar Harbor! This bustling town is the gateway to Acadia. There is no shortage of restaurants serving up seafood including the classic lobster roll. You will also find the terrific Abbe Museum that features the local Native American history and culture. Bar Harbor is a hub for all the biking, kayaking and scenic boat tours.
