Yellowstone is home to the world’s largest concentration of geo-thermal features, with over 10,000! We love exploring the thermal features and are always amazed at the variety that exist from mud pots, fumaroles, hot springs and geysers.
Here is a sampling of the features we love seeing on each visit to Geyser Basin in Yellowstone.
Fountain Paint Pots Boiling mud! How cool is that? And it’s colorful. Watching these mud pots randomly spew is so entertaining. It reassures us that Mother Nature definitely has a sense of humor!
Morning Glory Hot Spring The colors and clarity of the this hot spring has always thrilled. Did you know the colors are actually living bacteria? The temperature of the springs determine what kind of bacteria can grow, which determines the colors in the spring.
Old Faithful Geyser There is something about the gathering of thousands of people several times a day to witness a geological phenomenon. It is just something you have to do. It is pretty amazing to see the 100 ft + spray against the blue sky and its faithfulness is somehow reassuring.
There are plenty of other geysers that are not so famous, predictable or colorful, but always entertaining and fascinating! They have great names like Opal, Spasmodic, Castle, Grotto, Chromatic, etc…
