Trail of the Ancients National Parks Adventure
A one week national park adventure offered May, June, and July
Great for all physical levels/abilities
 

Trip Highlights

History, hikes and diverse landscapes. This trip features it all. Explore the best ruins and cliff dwellings of the Southwest in red canyons, painted desert, and high mesa  settings. Includes Grand Canyon South Rim, Canyon de Chelly, Mesa Verde, Wupatki, Hovenweep, and Homolovi parks.
 
Itinerary
 

Day 1
Depart Salt Lake City  5PM... We start this fantastic trip by picking up you and your fellow Adventurers in Salt Lake City. We'll prep you for your adventure and then enjoy a comfortable journey to our first national park...


Day 2
Grand Canyon South Rim...Spend the day in awe of one of the seven wonders of the world. Explore the Canyon from the top on the rim trail. Or, hike down into the Canyon on the Bright Angel Trail. Note: Hiking all the way to the Colorado River in one day is not recommended (12 miles)

Day 3
Sunset Crater Volcano and Wupatki National Monuments... Visit Wupatki and Woloki ruins and discover the amazing mix of cultures that existed here. Enjoy a picnic lunch in a Ponderosa Pine Forest with views of the painted desert and enjoy and a short hike past old lava flows. Discover how  Sunset Crater Volcano changed and shaped the local environment and the lives of the native people who lived in the area.  End the day at Homolovi State Park exploring a site where shards of pottery and tools were left behind over 700 years ago.


Day 4
Canyon de Chelly National Monument... Start the morning with a hike down the red sandstone cliffs to the lush green valley of Canyon de Chelly for great views of White House Ruin. Learn the legend of the Spider Women at Spider Rock Overlook before continuing on to the north side of the canyon past  Masacre Overlook and Canyon del Muerto.
 

 

Day 5
Mesa Verde National Park... Journey into some of the best preserved ruins in the world! Ranger guided tours of Cliff Palace and Balcony House will transport us into another time with a glimpse into the culture and traditions of the Ancestral Pueblans and the mystery of their disappearance.  A short hike will take us to Spruce Tree House and petroglyphs.
 


Day 6
Hovenweep National Monument... Discover the sacred “Sleeping Ute Mountain” as the sun rises over our next set of ruins, Hovenweep. Hike around this “deserted valley” past the Twin Towers and Hovenweep Castle. Then we’ll head to the adventure town of Blanding where we will hike and explore 3 lesser known secluded ruins.


Day 7
Moab.... Spend the day exploring the many petroglyph and ruin sites in the Moab area, or choose from a variety of exciting activities such as rafting or kayaking on the Colorado River,  jeeping, horseback riding, or canyoneering. We'll end the day with a surprise sunset hike. Click here for more information on these activities.

 


Day 8
We'll roll back into Salt Lake City by noon, and say our goodbyes.
